Hong Kong through the Iphone

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

After living in Asia for nearly four years I finally made it over to Hong Kong. Unfortunately, my husband and I were booked on separate flights for the four hours of travel. Which was AWESOME, because my daughter was cluster teething simultaneously with our trip. No husband and No happy baby. Yes Please. That must have been circulated Karma from my bratty teenage years. Anyway after a long flight, all the tears had dried up, mostly mine, and we were ready to see the city. My expectations of Hong Kong were all over the place as they were formed from anecdotal stories from traveling friends, expats, and of course my defensive Tokyoites who would never admit another city is nearly cool as our home. WHICH THERE ISN'T, SO DON'T COME TO TOKYO TALKIN' THAT NONSENSE! Jk Jk (just a little joking).

I actually really loved Hong Kong. It reminded me of when I first moved to Tokyo. Very stimulating and very alive. I caught up with old friends from Tokyo and even checked out some markets in Kowloon. Unfortunately I didn't carry around my Canon, but I snapped enough pictures with my Iphone to fill up the storage and to share a small photo diary..p

Can't wait to visit again.

Nigo X Uniqlo on Savvy Tokyo

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Nigo, the founder of A Bathing APE, has united with Uniqlo to launch a "new standard" for their t-shirt line Uniqlo UT. As a major BAPE fan, I was excited when approached by Savvy Tokyo, to interview the street-wear legend while he was here in Tokyo. Nigo gave me the scoop on his newly appointed role as creative director of Uniqlo UT and his plan on reinventing the t-shirt brand. I snapped a few pics of his first collection, featuring vintage logos, Star Wars characters, American cartoon favorites and one of a kind designs from our favorite brands. Scroll down to get a sneak peek of the line and make sure to check out the entirety of the interview on Tokyo's newest magazine for fashion, beauty and entertainment HERE on Savvy Tokyo

Year of the Horse

Monday, January 20, 2014

First of all, Happy 2014! It was sad to say farewell to the best year of my life. Apart from 2010, when I was married and moved to Japan, this year truly brought me more joy than I could have manifested in my wildest dreams. Thank you Motherhood.

For the holidays we headed back to Washington to spend Maya's first Christmas with family and friends. The short trip was worth the 9 hour flight and more. We struggled with an awful stomach virus, extreme jetlag and a non-existent nap schedule. However, we wouldn't change it for the world and it was our best Christmas thus far. We made it back to Tokyo just in time to ring in the New Year in our city. In lieu of bottle service and squeezing into a Hervé Léger, we headed to the Buddist Shrine in Meiji Jingu to make a wish for the "year of the horse" as the Japanese do each year.

Before we left, we shot a few Christmas family photos with my favorite Tokyo photographer, Mr. Anatole Papafillippou. Here are a few, Maya was 10 1/2 months then.

Traditional New Years in Japan is much different than the way Americans celebrate New Years Eve. For reference check out an older blog post where I touch base on the subject HERE.
This year David and I rang in 2014 the Japanese way and spent the day at the shrine with our little family of three.

Looking forward to 2014 and everything it will bring. It will be our fourth year in Japan. Time is going by at rapid speed.
