Maternity Style with TokyoUrbanBaby

Sunday, December 30, 2012
Hi Guys!

I hope your holiday season is full of family, love, food and style :). We are celebrating here in Tokyo for the third year. I can't believe it has been this long since we moved across the ocean to this island we call home. I am just a little over three weeks away from meeting our precious lil' mama and am far too pregnant for a 10 hour flight back home. The holidays and baby preparations have been taking up my time, hence the lack of post during my last trimester. The nesting is kicking in and my chic Tokyo apartment is slowing transforming into a baby haven. Strollers, PAC & Plays and bottle warmers consume the space once occupied by stiff chairs with over stuffed pillows, ornate statues and a clutter free entrance by the doorway. However, I am still keeping the place as sophisticated as possible and refraining from going all-out Chucky Cheese playland.

Although my apartment has adjusted to the newest arrival, my wardrobe has yet to evolve to the stereotypical "motherhood" get ups. I have purchased the necessary nursing bras, tanks and forgivable waistband leggings, but still refuse the boxy, unflattering sheets that take over a pregnant belly.
I recently did an interview with Tokyo blogger and mother Kate Neath.  Her blog TokyoUrbanBaby.com, has a huge following and gives foreign mothers, like myself, the skinny on where to shop, play, eat and hangout with your baby in Tokyo. Her blog provides a wealth of information and resources for mothers within Tokyo and I praise her for sharing all of the goodies.

Kate and I spent an afternoon talking maternity fashion, where to shop and a few style tips for first time pregnant moms. Please check out the interview and if you have some time take a look around her blog.

Uxibal: MayaBoho Apparel

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Fashion is beautiful. It is walking art, self expression, and whether intended or not, it shares a story. Recently I have been introduced to this new boot and accessories company called Uxibal. Manufactured and designed in Guatemala, the products are handmade by Mayan artisans using handwoven textiles, establishing a bohemian and free spirited flair. Uxibal is created in workshops rather than factories and is produced when an order is placed, no mass production. These boots are the epitome of walking art, and share the story of the many hands that have touched the leather and threads in which they are made. Now that my friend, is beautiful Fashion.

Please check out this video to learn more about the story behind Uxibal and how you can pledge to keep these boots walkin': CLICK HERE

How fab are these ankle boots? Paired with a sundress or leggings with a large, over-sized sweater, these can be worn all year round.
My favorite are the tall Comolapa boots. The details and patterns are unique and definitely make a statement.
You can style these true to their Bohemian swagger or make them a statement piece with a monotone look.

Boho Accessories

Uxibal also makes handwoven accessories inspired by the native women in Guatemala. This gorgeous, over-sized scarf is a beautiful piece that will stay on trend with it's intricate tribal print.

Make a pledge for Uxibal on KICKSTARTER and assist them in creating sustainable, native Fashion!

Leopard, Horses and Grandma's Sweater

Wednesday, November 21, 2012
Fall is by far my favorite season in Tokyo. Unlike the sticky Summer, the weather is a perfect combination between sun and a crisp breeze. Not to mention the color gradation of the foliage around the city.. STUNNING.

I am grateful that it is not yet snowing or SO cold I have to bundle up completely. My bump is growing weekly and I have been placing more and more things in the "pre-pregnancy" box that I moved to storage. Although the trendy pieces are being vacuum packed away, I refuse to limit my maternity style to bulky moo moos or my husband's old football jerseys. I may be getting as big as one, but "running back" is not my go-to fashion inspiration. Comfort is key during pregnancy, and I found a few brands that deliver funk, fashion and cozy all in one.

Have a Happy Happy Thanksgiving!!! Cheers to everyone styling a pseudo "baby bump" after the big feast :)

This gorgeous street is across from our apartment in Aoyama. We love taking weekend walks,  enjoying the beautiful change of season.

Leggings: Seraphine Maternity

Grandma Sweater: I am in love with this H&M cozy, wrap sweater. It is so soft and makes it feel as though you are wrapped in a blanket all day.

Booties: I do not rock heels everyday, but when I do, a stacked heel is the way to go. These Leopard booties from TopShop are stylish and comfortable.

DVF for Maternity

Friday, November 2, 2012

I've been hesitant to post "maternity fashion" photos. The two words together collide like oil and vinegar, or so I thought. I am rearing my third trimester and have almost exhausted my pre-pregnancy wardrobe. Farewell cocktail dress, so long button-up blouses and I said sayonara to denim months and months ago. However, I still have a few pieces that are flattering, stretchy and provide a lovely silhouette of the growing bump. One of my favorite pieces is this DVF wrap dress. It is perfect for a growing belly, has delicate cotton fabric, which is perfect for sensitive skin, and still provides a stylish and trendy maternity look without looking like sponge bob square dress. Thankful for the beautiful Fall weather in Tokyo, I was able to rock this well into October and even style it with some wedges.  I took these shots a few weeks ago, but still plan to throw on some sheer tights and boots and wear this piece for the next couple months.

I am obviously new at shopping for maternity, but I found that it is all about the silhouette. If you wear a huge moo moo over your bump you are destined to look, well.. HUGE. I favor the body conscious pieces that fit snugly around your mid section and still provide you with an hourglass shape.

With school finally coming to an end... I can't wait to post more maternity fashion and show some of the pieces I've found through Internet shopping and fast fashion retailing.

ACCESSORY ALERT!
When you get pregnant is Japan they give you this adorable little badge to put on your hand bag. It let's people know you are pregnant and gives you priority seating on all transportation. I think it is a cute and sweet gesture of the Japanese. The badge says "there is a baby inside me, please be careful". Something like that :)

Salameh Reception Photo Diary

Sunday, September 23, 2012
The best thing about close friends, is you can always start where you left off. No matter how long it has been.
San Diego could possibly be one of my favorite cities in the US. It's simplistic and casual atmosphere is a world apart from Tokyo (literally and figuratively) and the weather is just about perfect. I was so lucky to spend about a week in this little beach heaven with a group of my close girl friends to celebrate one of our best friend's wedding. To say DesireĆ© was a stunning bride, would be an understatement. She looked flawless and the surf and sail surroundings at the Catamaran Beach Resort complimented her gorgeous reception of mint greens, blues and cream. While I didn't partake in the spirits that were a'flowin, I party rocked with my sparkling water and passed around my  big "baby" aka camera, to capture the happiness that love can bring to us all.....

The sailboats, sunset and hues of the water were the perfect accessories to a gorgeous beach wedding.
Shots before the walk
Sweet little touches.. Leave a message for the bride on the coaster.

Maid of Honor Speech! BRAVO ANELVA

I had my healthy share of the red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. OMG bomb.com, mad kudos to her baker, because those things were unreal.

Tokyo Fashion Night Out 2012

Monday, September 17, 2012

Tokyo Fashion Night Out was a fun reason to throw on a red lip, heels and try on some drool worthy hand bags. With the little one on the way my wardrobe is dwindling, but I am having a blast with "The Bump", and dressing up my new accessory is becoming more fun than shoe shopping :).
Channeling my inner Flinestone, I threw on my Pebbles inspired dress and cruised through Omotesando, popping in and out of boutique hosted parties, passing the champagne to the left but welcoming the hors d'oeuvres with open arms.

I played dress up in the Caviar classics in Chanel as party go-ers waited in line for fresh manis, Dior's window displays were an immediate photo-op (as always), and I was loving the mulberry hues in Burberry. My night ended with a cherry on top, a few squeals and maybe a few tears (of joy), as I found my way to the back of Gucci and the pink paradise of baby gear. From ballet slippers, tiny totes, to terry cloth track suits, Baby Girl Gucci had me ear to ear. Whatever I had swooned over in Chanel, Dior and the likes, could not compare to these precious pieces of baby girl heaven. I don't have the intention on dressing my infant in head to toe Gucci, or Gucci at all for that matter, but the epiphany of having my baby girl resonated as I stroked each ruffle, bow and rhinestone :).
