It's All About The 90's

Thursday, May 8, 2014

We've all been patiently waiting to channel our inner Cher and Dionne, and now is our time to look "CLASSIC"!  Birkenstocks? Crop tops? Mom jeans? It seems we’ve regressed to the 90s. However, with the right styling, you are certain to look “all that and a bag of chips.”

Check out my article below that was posted on Savvy Tokyo on how to rock Springs trends now!

1. Artistic prints. Chanel and Céline sent gallery-inspired pieces down the runways, spewing an art pop trend of paint swirls and brush strokes. Wear a colorful piece like with solid basics to let your wearable art shine bright on its own.
2. Oh, hey, crop top, I see you aren’t going anywhere this season. Truth has it, there’s no avoiding the midriff bearing movement, so what better excuse to experiment? Styling can be tricky, but a play with proportions keeps the look chic yet still demure. Pair one with a high waist skirt or high-rise trouser to show only a sliver of skin. To avoid baring the flesh all together, wear over a crisp button up shirt and cover up with a denim jacket or cardigan.
3. High-rise denim. Yes, it’s true: mom jeans are all the rage in the denim world. Opt for minimal accessories and shirts with short hemlines for the most flattering affect. A menswear shirt knotted at the bottom is another option for the high-rise pant.

4. Sporty chic. Show your athleticism without breaking a sweat. Sportswear basics in luxe materials are conveying a whole new message of casual wear. If a leather jogging pant is not in your comfort zone, choose a silk bomber jacket or an accessory such as a leather baseball hat to add an active edge to your look.
5. Hawaiian prints. Floral patterns are taking over, and thanks to chic silhouettes and luxe fabrications, hibiscus and palm tree prints are no longer subject to oversized vacation shirts and permitted in paradise only. When styling separates, keep other aspects of your outfit neutral, or to fully commit to the trend, rock a one-piece in a head-to-toe floral motif.
6. Iridescent and metallic accessories. Put the pedal to the metal this spring and have fun with shiny texture. Futuristic accessories such as a drawstring bag, evening clutch and chunky jewelry in mirrored fabrics are great ways to incorporate the bright trend.
7. Slide sandals. How jacked are Birkenstock fans that their blister-friendly sandals are back in vogue? The revival of slide sandals comes at an optimal time for walking and train hopping Tokyoites. Sport the classics  or find a pair with a platform or heel for a modern twist. The casual shoe can be taken up a notch with lady-like pieces such as sundresses, full skirts and glamorous jewelry.
8. Pleated skirts. A former schoolgirl signature is now one of spring’s biggest trends. Found in chiffon, silk and other flowing fabrications, the pleated skirt will pair perfectly with a pastel, light knit sweater and wedges or a denim jacket and heeled ankle boots.

Tokyo Disneyland

Saturday, April 12, 2014

We took our daughter to Disneyland for her 1st Birthday. We get it, she is only ONE, she isn't going to remember, or understand or care, but I wanted to do something special. We aren't back home hosting some kitschy party with our family and friends in attendance.  Instead we had an obnoxiously cute, yet intimate celebration. Just the three of us and it was magical.

The Disneyland Hotel was recently remodeled into a timeless masterpiece. The decor screamed finesse, with outrageous chandeiliers, fountains and stained glass mosaics of favorite disney classics. It was like a castle and I, I mean Maya, felt like a princess.

People looked at me cross-eyed when I said I was taking my one year old to Disney, but it actually was completely age appropriate. She enjoyed "It's A Small World", ToonTown, the boat rides as well as the teacups. Beyond rides, toddlers are stimulated just by the music, the gift shops and of course the characters. Clearly Disneyland is equipped for kids, but even toddlers and infants are in thought. Changing room facilities and snack time areas were sprinkled throughout the park and strollers had their own parking spots.

Traveling with a toddler is never easy, naps are thrown and the change of environment alters moods, but thankfully Tokyo Disneyland is only a 20 minute train ride from Tokyo Station. Painless compared to 10 hour flights.
After check in, we hit up this incredible buffet of what seemed like endless options of cuisines from all over the world.
The Mickey plates were getting me excited.
I made a plate of every dessert, which ultimately Maya had no interest in. Somebody had to eat it!

The band shook her up a bit but mommy didn't mind. Clearly Disney was only for Maya's enjoyment :).

Naptime at Disney = improvisation. We let the boat do the rocking.
TIP: In total there were about 6 rides suitable for children Maya's age. They do not allow the kids to sit on your lap and they have to be old enough to sit up next to you.
We were planning on staying until the night parade but realized they show the same floats during the day.
The Queen of Hearts restaurant inside Disneyland does not need reservations and provides a "Happy Birthday" treat on a cake. However, they would not allow the candle to be lit.

I have an obsession with instagram and my poor Canon has totally been feeling left out (Don't worry Mr. C, plan on zoomin' in on those cherry blossoms this weekend, aight?) Here's a few outfit shots, célfiez, and me trying to get all artistic and stuff waiting for the shows to start.

A sweet little visitor came to fashion week in her tutu, leopard and city girl tee.

Please check out his collection report on SAVVY TOKYO, it was one of my favorite shows. Here is a short snippet:  "Set into motion by a live percussion performance, the “Power of Flower” theme to Saito’s fall collection was apparent with colorful floral motifs draped to perfection on models sporting two-toned hair. Contemporary adornments such as chain belts, sparkly obis, fur shawls and technicolor patterns were used tastefully, updating the kimono while still maintaining a traditional Japanese aesthetic."

My Grandma was so dope to me. Her style lives on. This was her chain belt that I recreated into a double gold chain necklace. The Chanel pendant was from a pair of my earrings. I lost the other one, so I made this into a necklace and wear in with an "M", for my daughter.
